“I have been a member of the Kiwanis Club of North West Christchurch in a volunteering role for 36 years. The main aim in Kiwanis is serving the children of the world. To this end I became involved, about 7 years ago, in repairing broken toys from our two local toy libraries, Hornby and Upper Riccarton.

This task has given me a great deal of satisfaction and pleasure especially when I have observed the joy the children get when they select a toy. These toys are generally ones that they would not normally find in their own homes.

One occasion I particularly recall was when I was returning a small bicycle which I had repaired and enhanced. It was almost instantly selected with great enthusiasm by a young boy. I often wonder if the extra addition of a bell was appreciated by his parents!”
